Hello

SCROLL DOWN

Hello

I'M ATHENA RAYPOLD AND I AM A WRITER.

With a background in journalism and an honours degree in English, a professor once told me that I "have a lovely cadence to [my] writing."  I am known for connecting easily with clients and interviewees and I am a rigorous researcher. In a world where the written word is both prolific and ubiquitous, no topic stands alone, untouched by other writers. As such, my challenge is to contribute a new, unique voice to the plethora of voices that already exist. Whether I'm differentiating your website content, standing out in business blogs, or distinguishing my own creative non-fiction from other writers, my writing lends an original twist to any given topic. I am notorious for my staunch perspective on grammar (long live the Oxford comma) and I am militant about copyright, plagiarism, and adequately citing sources.

I am no stranger to intensely tight timelines. Something about a looming deadline brings out the best in my writing; the tension strips me of self-doubt, transports me to a place in which everything but the writing ceases to exist. There is nothing more satisfying to me than good writing  I live to write  it's my nature, my passion, my purpose.

The Work

The Work

YOU supply THE FILLING, I MAKE THE PIE

Whether writing scares the hell out of you or you just don't have the time for it, I will funnel your thoughts into cohesive, comprehensible content. Working with businesses and individuals to tell their stories meaningfully requires generous listening and the ability to take their life's work, their core values, their passions and put them into words that evoke a reaction. As a writer, I don't always nail it on the first try. Imagining myself into your mind requires intimacy, openness, and thoughtful inquiry. This work takes collaboration, it takes time, it takes multiple drafts, and it takes considered, thoughtful, feedback to reach perfection.

Variety is a writer's lifeblood

Without variety, the creative well dries up, and mechanics and style grow stagnant, become lacklustre and unreadable. I flex my writerly muscles by continually working in any number of fields at a given time. Each week, my workload varies from ghostwriting business blogs to creating website content, from interviewing local businesses for editorial publications to editing children's books, from composing marketing collateral and corporate profiles to writing my own creative non-fiction. I deftly transfer my writing expertise from one project to another, juggling different forms and styles with both fervour and authority.

The Reader

The Reader

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” - STEPHEN KING

At eight years old, you could find me huddled in bed at night with a book,  a towel shoved up against the crack in the door to hide the room's light from my parents. Even today, you can find me reading until the wee hours, loathe to abandon my literary friends to the call of sleep. Pair my endless reading with my incessant need to journal, to blog, and to write for myself every day, and I am a writer - both personally and professionally.

The Letters

The Letters

"THE IDEA IS TO WRITE SO THAT PEOPLE WILL HEAR IT AND IT SLIDES THROUGH THE BRAIN AND GOES STRAIGHT TO THE HEART." - MAYA ANGELOU

For me, writing is about connection. As an act of almost unbearable vulnerability, my words are meant to be felt, to bridge the divide between me and you and between you and your audience. Whether you're project is business or personal, the aim is always to be undeniable, to be memorable, and to be valuable. As a writer, I help my clients communicate who they are and what they do and how they do it. But I also need to share who I am and what I have to offer with my clients, with my friends, with my family, and with the world. That's why I'm cooking up monthly letters that share meaningful content from what I'm passionate about to what I'm working on, from who I'm working with to how I can help you. Consider these letters an offer of ingredients to spice up your life.

"A calling is a mysterious, felt sense of this work is mine to do." - Tara Sophia Mohr

Athena expertly wrote all of the website content for our business rebrand. She has a lot of patience, goes above and beyond the call of duty, she is quick to reply and deliver, extremely responsive, communicates well and almost always immediately. She asks really good questions that get to the core of what our business is about and truly takes the time to get to know and understand her clients.
— Rob Corno, The Good Real Estate Company
I’ve worked with Athena on a variety of writing assignments and the quality of her writing has never been anything less than exceptional. She’s quick to respond to queries and has a fast turn around rate, which is crucial to my industry. She excels at independently researching a topic and coming back to us with a product that is exactly what we asked for. I look forward to working with her more in the future.
— Ian Cooney, Manager, Social Lite Communications
Athena is such a creative, thoughtful storyteller and writer. She does a lovely job of telling people’s stories, getting to the heart of who they are and why they do what they do. I’ve received countless emails from people who have mentioned what a joy it was to be interviewed by Athena and how happy they are to have her tell their story. Athena is also a very punctual, reliable freelancer; she always meets her deadlines and is great at keeping me up-to-date on her progress with stories. It’s been such a pleasure working with her.
— Sydnee Bryant, City Editor, Yellow Pages Canada
I love everything about [the article]. I feel like Athena was one of the most talented people I have ever come across in regards to asking all the right questions. The ones that made me really think. She is truly talented. This article really describes me. It’s perfect.
— Lindsay Mark-Mills, The Ruby Thursday Collective
Athena! I am SO thankful I’ve met you. Reading the story you wrote for me inspires me to continue doing what I’m doing. That I’m on the right track with my life, my goals, and my dreams. You asked me all the right questions (not just generic ones, but REAL questions) and really dove into why I’m a photographer and the opportunity to reflect on it with you has been strengthening. You have a real talent for writing and giving my answers LIFE. To put into words what I could only feel and to write exactly the points I wanted mentioned. You’ve helped me gain so much more confidence for my business and for that, I thank you!
— Laurie Jensen, Laurie K. Jensen Photography
Athena, I don’t know if anyone will ever better capture my feelings and emotions than you have in my business write-up for Yellow Pages. It was really hard for me to open up and talk about myself. As a photographer, I like to capture the story, not be the story. You made things easy, asking insightful questions and contributing to our conversation in positive and encouraging ways. Reading the words you have written about me and my business, I feel like I am looking at a new photo of myself. And even though I know it’s ‘just’ me, I’m surprised at how nice I look and I can’t wait to share it. I truly feel that you’ve captured the essence of how I want my business to be perceived.
— Melissa Appleton, Appletree Photography
I’ve had an opportunity to look over the story again, and once again I’m so thrilled! Athena did such a great job of pulling out the best parts of our interview and creating something that tells my story – despite having her interviewee be less than articulate at times.

Athena, thank you SO MUCH for creating this story. You are truly gifted and I enjoy reading each letter, blog post, and story of yours that I get a chance to read!
